NHSO to Distribute Free Condoms to UHC Gold Card Subscribers From Feb. 1

The National Health Security Office (NHSO) will be giving out around 94.5 million condoms starting on Feb. 1, which will be available for free to all "gold card" or 30-baht subscribers of the Universal Health Care (UHC) scheme.

In a press release on Jan. 22, NHSO Secretary-General Dr. Jadej Thammatacharee was quoted as saying that condoms can help in the prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, as well as unwanted pregnancies. Gold card subscribers can receive their free condoms, which will be given with lubricants, through the Paotang application beginning next Wednesday. Four sizes of condoms will be available. Those eligible will receive 10 condoms per week, no more than 52 times per person for the entire year.

Subscribers who do not have smartphones may also pick up their free condoms at designated drugstores, community clinics, and state-run health offices in their area, granted they have a Thai ID card to show.

The NHSO is also working in collaboration with the public and private sectors to install condom vending machines at different locations for gold card subscribers who feel uncomfortable receiving their free condoms at designated service units. These automatic condom dispensers will be piloted at three service points in Pattaya, Chon Buri province, beginning on Valentine's Day on Feb. 14.
