Thai Gov’t Aims to Re-enrol School Dropouts by September

Education Minister Trinuch Thienthong said on Sunday, June 26, that the government is aiming to re-enrol children who dropped out of school by September.

The ministry has so far tracked down 52,760 out of the 67,129 students who dropped out of school during the pandemic. About 31,446 of them agreed to return to school. For the remaining 14,369 students, however, 8,741 of them couldn't be located and the ministry is still attempting to reach them.

“Even though the recovery rate is satisfactory, the number of students who decided to quit school remains significant, with 5,625 of them at the compulsory education level. We'll target this group in our second phase,” Minister Trinuch said.

She added that they’re figuring out the reasons these students stopped going to school and will adjust their measures to make sure that these students stay in school once they come back.

“Some may need financial assistance while others may need help with their learning,” she said.

Earlier this year, the government launched the "Bring Children Back to School" project with the help of different agencies to encourage children to return and finish their education.
