Five Things You Need to Do to Achieve a Solid Men’s Skincare Routine

Skin problems like acne breakout can happen to anybody regardless of gender. Hence, we are all encouraged to pay attention to our skincare regimen.

For men, the regimen should not be limited to washing your face with soap and water only. Just like women, men also endure common skin issues such as acne, oiliness, and premature skin aging. But we know how choosing the right skincare products can get overwhelming.

Fret not. In this article, we’ll look at the five things you should keep in mind to achieve a solid skincare routine for men, especially for beginners.

Step 1: Determine Your Skin Type

This is the first basic step to achieve your #SkinGoals because this will guide you to figure out the perfect products that will work for you and fight your skin issues.

There are seven skin types:

  • Acne-prone: This type is susceptible to breakouts, whiteheads, blackheads, and other impurities.
  • Dry: This refers to dehydrated skin so mild soap is recommended.
  • Oily: This exhibits a shiny and greasy appearance. Oil-free moisturizers are advised.
  • Combination: This refers to an oily T-zone (forehead down to nose) and a dry face.
  • Normal: This skin type is not prone to breakouts and has mild or zero negative reactions to any skincare products. Lucky you!
  • Mature: This refers to sagging skin with dry spots and dullness.
  • Sensitive: This is prone to irritation, rashes, or even acne breakouts. It is advisable to use non-abrasive products.

Step 2: Clean Your Face Using Men’s Facial Cleanser

The face is our biggest asset so washing it should be done day and night. Compared to women, men’s skin is generally oilier.

Regularly washing your face will help eliminate dull skin in the morning and prevent your pores from clogging at night. To do this, use warm water and gently apply facial cleanser in a circular motion. Rinse with cool water and pat dry.

Step 3: Exfoliate Your Skin by Using Face Scrub

This is done once or thrice a week after cleansing your face to remove dead skin cells. As part of the skincare routine for men, guys with oily skin type should exfoliate more often compared to those with sensitive or dry skin.

Exfoliation helps rejuvenate your skin cells and improve its overall appearance. This should be done before shaving to avoid ingrown hair and bumps. Use lukewarm water.

Step 4: Apply Moisturizer

As you age, your body may not produce enough collagen, but this hydration process helps to make your skin look firmer and younger by providing the essential nutrients.

Apply face moisturizer gently and use a generous amount on the forehead and around the eyes. Guys who have oily skin may skip this step.

Step 5: Prevent Skin Aging

You can naturally avoid premature skin aging by not smoking and maintaining a healthy diet (less sugar intake). A major contributor to skin aging is too much sunlight exposure. UV rays may also cause skin cancer.

It is highly recommended to always use sunscreen (with at least SPF 15), especially when going outside. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before stepping outside to give your skin enough time to absorb it.
