Broadway Classic ‘West Side Story’ Is Coming to Bangkok This October

Theatre fans, rejoice! It’s time to prepare your tissues, as a new tear-jerking production of “West Side Story” is coming to Bangkok this October.

Titled “West Side Story, The Broadway Classic,” the musical is set to have a total of six shows from Oct. 5-8 at the Thailand Cultural Centre.

It will have an all-American cast, with support from a creative team of Broadway veterans: Lonny Price (director), Julio Monge (choreographer), Grant Sturiale (musical supervisor and conductor), Anna Louizos (scenic designer), Alejo Vietti (costume designer), Fabrice Kebour (lighting designer), and Tom Marshall (sound designer).

The play will include original choreography from American choreographer, film and theatre director, and five-time Tony Award-winner, Jerome Robbins.

Supported by the Embassy of the United States of America, the production is also in celebration of the 190th anniversary of the U.S. and Thailand’s diplomatic relations this year.

Act 1 will be an hour and 15 minutes long, while Act 2 will be shorter at 45 minutes. For a local touch, the musical will be accompanied by the Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra.

Set in the mid-1950s in the Upper West Side (UWS) of New York’s Manhattan, “West Side Story” explores the conflict between two teenage street gangs (the Jets and the Sharks) and the forbidden love between Tony, a former Jet, and Maria, the sister of the leader of the Sharks. It takes inspiration from William Shakespeare's “Romeo and Juliet.”
