New HK$5000 Consumption Vouchers for Hong Kong Given Out in April 2023

Hong Kong government announced a new round of consumption vouchers worth HK$5000 for all Hong Kong permanent adult residents and new arrivals to assist the local economy and boost spending.

Financial Secretary Paul Chan shared the news in the release of the city’s budget for 2023/4, stating that each resident will receive a cash voucher of HK$5000 in two batches of HK$2500, compared to HK$10,000 for 2022’s voucher scheme.

The first batch of HK$3000 will be distributed in April, with the second batch handed out in summer 2023.

People coming to HK on other admission schemes and those in the city to study will only receive HK$2500 worth of consumption vouchers.

Hong Kong’s government has used electronic consumer vouchers in 2021 and 2022 to assist the growth of the economy hurt by COVID-19 restrictions, decrease unemployment rate and assist with ailing businesses.

In 2021, each adult permanent resident received HK$5,000, and all residents got HK$10,000 in 2022. The two rounds of consumption vouchers helped boost the economy, costing the government a total of HK$102.4 billion.

The local economy contracted 3.5 per cent last year, however, Hong Kong’s unemployment rate improved from 5.4 per cent in early 2022 to 3.4 per cent today. Inflation sits at 1.7 per cent.
