Former Cop John Lee Wins Chief Executive Election

Former police officer and Secretary for Security John Lee won the 2022 Chief Executive Election on the weekend with 1,416 valid “support” votes from members of Hong Kong’s election committee.

With only fourteen members objecting to Lee’s victory, Returning Officer Keith Yeung declared Lee elected as Chief Executive-electorate after he obtained more than 750 valid “support” votes.

Current-Chief Executive Carrie Lam extended her congratulations to Lee on his successful election in a press conference on Saturday and said that her current government will work with Lee to “ensure a seamless transition with the Chief Executive-elect and render all the support needed for the assumption of office by the new term of government.”

Lee is expected to begin his five-year term on July 1, 2022.
