Hong Kong Disneyland Reopens on April 21 as COVID-19 Rules Ease

Hong Kong Disneyland is set to reopen on April 21 and operate initially at half capacity as the government relaxes social distancing measures.

This was revealed during the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (LegCo) Panel on Economic Development yesterday, March 28, when Commerce and Economic Development Secretary Edward Yau said theme parks will gradually resume fully capacity.

“For instance, in the first phase for theme parks such as Disneyland, we’ll limit capacity to a maximum of 50% of full capacity, and in the second phase 75%,” he said.

An archive of the remote meeting is available on LegCo’s official YouTube for those who are interested to watch.

Hong Kong Disneyland has been closed since Jan. 7 when COVID-19 cases surged due to the Omicron variant. Michael Moriarty, the managing director of Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, told lawmakers that he felt encouraged with the statement.

“We would be included in the opening on April 21, and we are excited about that, and we will follow the government’s recommendations as it relates to the social distancing relaxation over that time period,” he said.

The theme park has been in the red for seven consecutive years. Moriarty said he is confident that the park can improve its financial performance once they reopen.

“In the first quarter of this fiscal year, we were able to break even, and I’m confident that when we do open up again that we’ll be able to have similar results going forward.”
