Hong Kong Sets New Record With 6,116 COVID-19 Cases on Feb. 17

Hong Kong logged 6,116 COVID-19 cases on Thursday, Feb. 17, to mark another record-breaking daily tally since the pandemic began in early 2020, according to data from the Centre for Health Protection.

Of these, nine are imported and the rest are locally transmitted. Hong Kong reported 16,513 COVID-19 infections over the last 14 days, comprising 103 imported and 16,410 locally acquired cases. The total number of COVID-19 cases in the city now stands at 37,071, meaning the record seen over the past two weeks alone has exceeded the number of cases during the first year of the pandemic.

Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam said on Feb. 15 that there will be no city-wide lockdowns despite the surge in infections.

Adopting a dynamic zero-infection approach, Hong Kong is implementing district-based lockdowns that are specific to neighbourhoods and buildings.
