Hong Kong International Film Festival 46 Begins Aug. 15

Having been postponed since its original commencement date in March 2022, the 46th Hong Kong International Film Festival is finally returning for Aug. 15-31. Similar to last year’s edition, the festival will take on a hybrid format, offering screenings and film-related events both in-person and online.

An annual celebration and sharing of films from Hong Kong and around the globe, this year’s lineup boasts more than 200 films from over 67 countries. The festival opening will lead with two major locally produced films, including a debut of “Where the Wind Blows” by Philip Yung starring festival ambassador Aaron Kwok, in addition to Ng Yuen-fai's “Warriors of Future,” which stars leading actor and co-producer Louis Koo.

Despite the festival dates being pushed by government restrictions, festival ambassador Kwok maintains his optimistic outlook, stating: "The last two years have been challenging for everyone because of the COVID-19 pandemic, not least for those who work in the film industry…with productions resuming gradually, I am seeing signs of a recovery, despite the recent setback with the Omicron outbreak."

This year’s Filmmaker-in-Focus is comedy queen and Hong Kong actor-producer powerhouse Sandra Ng. Up to 10 selected titles featuring Ng’s talents will be offered as part of the programme, as well as a face-to-face discussion on Aug. 27 with the actress herself.

Festivalgoers can also get in touch with industry insiders as part of HKIFF’s many film-related events. The “POP-UP Directors” series lets film buffs connect with respected directors from around the world and features filmmakers from Iran, Indonesia, Italy, and more. For those who want to dive deeper, there will also be virtual masterclasses with the Dardenne brothers from Belgium, and with Austrian director Ulrich Seidl after the “Rimini” screening, in addition to a panel with award-winning Taiwanese film director Chung Mong-Hong on his film “The Falls.”

Though coinciding with the annual Cine Fan Summer International Film Festival, also organised by the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society, HKIFF46 will be taking precedent, pushing the Cine Fan Summer festival to 2023 instead. Tickets are available online, and a discounted rate will be offered for students, the elderly, and people with disabilities.
