M+ Museum Set to Open Nov. 12, 2021, Free Admission for Hong Kongers for a Year

M+ Museum is set to open on Nov. 21, 2021, to public, following years of delays of construction. The museum is set to become the leader for contemporary art in the city.

Hong Kongers with valid identification will be able to visit M+ Museum for free for one year following the opening ceremony and media tour held on Nov. 11, 2021

Artwork will be drawn from the museum's collection, M+ Collections, displayed in the site's 17,000-square-metre exhibition space. Some 33 galleries and spaces within the museum will show artists' works from Hong Kong, mainland China, Asia, and Europe.

The museum’s opening displays will include six thematic exhibitions within the M+ Collections, featuring visual and aural artworks, architectural projects, moving image works, and design objects.

Some of the exhibitions on display will include Hong Kong: Here and Beyond, a platform “captur[ing] the city’s transformation and unique visual culture from the 1960s to the present,” M+ Sigg Collection: From Revolution to Globalization, a “survey of the development of contemporary Chinese art from the 1970s through the 2000s,” Individuals, Networks, Expressions, a narrative of “post-war international visual art told from the perspective of Asia.”

The museum will open from Tuesday to Sunday (10 AM to 6 PM), except public holidays. Friday opening hours will be extended to 10 PM on Fridays.

Henry Tang, chairman of the board of the West Kowloon Cultural District, spoke of the significance of the museum’s opening for West Kowloon's growth and the burgeoning art scene in the city.

“The official opening of M+ marks a major milestone in delivering the vision for the development of the West Kowloon Cultural District as a vital contribution to the future of Hong Kong, building on its reputation as one of the world’s leading arts and cultural hubs,” Tang said.

“We will make M+ a must-visit destination for local, regional, and international visitors.”

“I firmly believe that the future history of the art museum will be written to a significant degree in Asia," added Suhanya Raffel, M+ museum director, in a press release on the museum's website.
