President Xi to Attend Handover Anniversary Meeting in Hong Kong

Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to attend celebrations for the 25th anniversary of the handover of Hong Kong and the inaugural ceremony of the sixth term of Hong Kong’s government with Chief Executive-elect John Lee.

Carrie Lam told reporters in an announcement of Xi’s return to Hong Kong that “with the Central Authorities’ full support, the Hong Kong SAR has been steadfastly implementing the “one country, two systems” principle over the past five years.”

"President Xi's attendance this year, which celebrates the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland, fully shows the importance the Central Authorities attach to the city as well as their support for Hong Kong.”

John Lee said the implementation of “one country, two systems” has been proven to be the best safeguard for the “long-term prosperity and stability of Hong Kong since its return to the motherland.”

Mr. Lee, secretaries, deputy secretaries of departments, and directors of bureaus of Lee’s government were said to be “delighted” of his arrival to Hong Kong.

“The President's attendance shows the importance that the Central Authorities attach to the Hong Kong SAR, and the hopes for its future development, giving tremendous confidence in the governing team of the sixth-term Government,” a press statement wrote.
