No one does party better than the LGBTQ+ community. From tacky decorations and neon dance floors to charming drag queens and groovy playlists, these parties are nothing short of fun. Maybe it’s the sense of inclusivity or just the inherent positive vibe around the community. Whatever it is, partying with the queer crowd is a sure blast. In Hong Kong, the gay crowd continues to thrive with a slew of events and activities that celebrate inclusivity.
As the city prepares for the Gay Games 2022, here are five of the most flamboyant LGBTQ+ bars in Hong Kong worth checking out.
Perched on the 22nd floor of the Oliv building, BING BING is the place to be if you’re looking for a combination of great cocktails and ambiance. This gay bar in Hong Kong easily gets jampacked during weekends with hip and young patrons, so be prepared to wait outside if you come in late. Order a drink of its signature Money Secret or Purplar cocktail for that much-needed kick before conquering the dance floor.
Location: 22/F Oliv 15 Sharp St East Causeway Bay
With its massive space along Hollywood Road, Lambda Lounge doubles as a venue for inclusive community events, conferences, and fairs. It has a bevy of events lined up to entertain the queer (and straight) crowd, such as performances from the city’s best DJs and cardio party sessions! On Tuesdays, this gay bar in Hong Kong celebrates ladies’ night, giving off a 30% discount to anyone who identifies as a “gurl.”
Location: 108 Hollywood Road Sheung Wan
FLM’s Secret Show Saturdays is a crowd favourite, packed with live performances by drag queens, singers, burlesque entertainers, and dancers. Each week’s show is a guesswork, and you’ll have no clue until the curtains are unrolled, making it twice the fun. Enjoy two-for-one drinks between 7 PM and 9 PM on Mondays through Saturdays. On Wednesdays, first-time visitors are given complementary vodka, while on Thursdays, bar-hoppers can enjoy karaoke, bingo, or trivia night.
Location: 62 Jervois St, Sheung Wan
It’s hard to talk about gay bars in Hong Kong without mentioning The Pontiac. Nestled amidst SoHo’s bustling party hub, The Pontiac serves up some great cocktails like the Hobnail (a combination of Irish whiskey, ginger, Averna, bitters, and orange oil) and Run Rabbit Run (fernet hunter, purple carrot gin, cassis, lime, and nutmeg) that go for HK$50 and HK$88, respectively. If you’re unsure what to pick, ask The Pontiac’s trusty bartender and they’ll whip up something good for you. A typical night at this gay bar in Hong Kong includes DJs cranking up some throwback tunes as regulars dance on the tables. Something you can’t miss!
Location: 13 Old Bailey Street, SoHo
This illuminated bar in Kowloon is popular among gay bears. For the uninitiated, bears in the LGBTQ+ community refer to a gay or bisexual person with a cuddly body and prominent facial and body hair. Head over to this bar during the last Saturday of the month to experience its dance party with a DJ on deck!
Location: 5/F Pearl Oriental Tower, 225 Nathan Road, Kowloon
