The elongated Hong Kong summer has seemed to fizzle out in the pouring rain of the past couple of weeks, making it the time to usher in some new changes. Finally hitting the autumn season, the smell of chestnut carts have begun to seep into the air, signaling to the fall treats and new eats to come. From an anticipated new steakhouse in Tsim Sha Tsui to a showcase of delicacies of the Mediterranean coast, these are our favourite picks of new restaurants and bars that are hitting the streets of Hong Kong in October 2022.

Head along on an omakase journey into Edomae-style Japanese cuisine led by Sushi Rin’s chef Lap. A celebration of Nippon’s freshest catches and seasonal specialties, the spread presented in the latest menu entails some supreme shellfish and oysters. In full swing amongst the waters of Japan at this time of year, chef Lap-selected Ishigaki Gai Castle Stone Clam, Taira Gai Pen Shell, and Hokkaido Oyster are the mollusked stars of his sushi rotation. There are also other delights like Spanish Mackarel, Omi Beef, and plump Salmon Roe to enjoy at either lunch (starting HK$1,380) or dinner (starting HK$1,680).

Shrouded behind the unlikely location of the Towngas flagship in Causeway Bay, chef Stanley Wong’s CulinArt 1862 brings forward an extraordinary new restaurant and private dining lounge concept that melds together the most influential culinary roots in his professional history with sustainable cooking. The first section of the restaurant consists of a Lounge & Kitchen space that spotlights seasonal delicacies in sleek, ultra-modern ways. There is the garland-esque Beetroot Carpaccio (HK$145) with blue cheese and sweet figs, or it’s meatier counterpart the Wagyu Beef Tartare (HK$178) innovatively paired with the crunch of rice crackers.

Cordoned in a luxurious Chef’s Table area, diners seeking a more intimate experience can dine on the Seven Course Tasting Menu (HK$1,288 per person) created especially by chef Stanley himself. Delicately balancing the interplay of hot and cold, East and West, the menu features highlights like the saturated Red Prawn Tartare with zesty notes of jalapeño, yuzu and smoked capsicum, as well as the binchotan coal-grilled Rangers Valley Striploin that melts in your mouth. No guest leaves without being at least stunned by the one-of-a-kind Dessert Presentation where chef Stanley puts on a multisensorial show of sweets.

Trading Mody Road for the Mediterranean, Mulino is an al fresco concept from Chess House Restaurant Group, and built by the culinary team behind Chutney Indian restaurant alongside renowned Middle Eastern concepts around Hong Kong. Taking from the rustic eateries associated with the coastal locales along the Mediterranean Sea, the waterfront lawn offers up an animated space with fantastic food.

Dive into vibrant fare amongst the likes of the creamy and savoury Vitello Tonnato (HK$188), spiced up Tableside Mutabal (HK$148) yogurt eggplant dip that’s ready for any vessel. Along with mains such as the Roasted Whole Lamb Spare Rib Dusted with Cumin (HK$558) and comforting Seafood Carta Fata (HK$348) that’s ripe for sharing. Don’t leave without giving their cocktail infusions and spirited fruity libations a try, with the Pisco and coconut rum spiked Plum Pivot (HK$140) or the earthen Smoky Mill (HK$125) with spiced rum and rhubarb bitters, as highlights.

LQV Group is opening the doors to their newest offshoot in Stanley named Terrace by LQV. Replicating the flair of the French riviera and the languid summer setting of Provence and the South of France, the concept spotlights delicate beverages like rosé, white wines, and Champagnes alongside light bites that are optimised for passing around and enjoying al fresco.

Incorporating a unique French-Mediterranean vision into the food menu, Terrace by LQV offers diners seafood dishes like Grilled French Sea Bass and Pastis Flambée Grilled Prawns that evoke visions of barbecue seshes in their fresh smokiness. Fresh vegetables and the signature LQV range of cold cuts, spreads, jams, and baked goods are up for grabs too of course.

PONTYCafe

Filling in the sore gap of a legendary American-style restaurant on Old Baily Street – RIP Flying Pan – the brains behind Asia’s rowdiest gay dive bar at The Pontiac have recently hard launched neighbouring PONTYCafe into existence for spicy tipples and a menu extolling the greatness of the buttermilk biscuit.

The all-day café opens from Wednesday to Sunday from 9 AM straight through to 5 PM, ending an early happy hour with a selection of four home-made biscuit sandwiches, Sausage, Egg & Avo, Chicken, and Bacon, Egg & Cheese (HK$74), a selection of small and big plates, including the powerful Whisky Cured Salmon (HK$98) and HK Steak Au Poivre (HK$218). Dip into the Dive Bar Bloody (HK$88) whilst you’re at it for a brave recreation of a Bloody Mary.

"Kingdom Treasures" menu at The Chinese Library

Aqua Restaurant Group’s regional Chinese venue The Chinese Library, located in the decadent Tai Kwun establishment, is set to release Kingdom Treasures, a series of eight brand-new dishes curated by executive chef Junno Li featuring treasures hailing from the northern Middle Kingdom.

From now until Dec. 9 and available to order a la carte, diners are set to explore Li’s culinary journey and experiences of Shanghai, Hangzhou, Sichuanese, Guangdong, and Hunanese creations, including the Shanghai-inspired Prawn Noodles & Fish Maw in Pickled Sauce (HK$188), Hangzhou-classic Osmanthus Honey-Glazed Ham with Pork Crackling (HK$98), Sichuan soup Double-Boiled Consommé with Chicken Liver (HK$298), Sichuan-style Braised Sea Cucumber (HK$398), and Black Sesame & Walnut Sweet Soup with Salted Egg Thousand-Layer Cake (HK$108).

Spanish taverna Rustico in Lai Chi Kok is unveiling a salivating new dry-aged menu in celebration of Spain’s National Day this October 12, serving a new fare of rare cuts and breeds of fish, poultry and meat, paired with a free-flow option of Spanish cava at HK$188 per person for two hours.

Head chef Carlos Salvador Asensio’s mission to bring authentic Spanish meats and vibe to Hong Kong is showcased with Rustico’s dry-aging chamber, curing the finest of Spanish meats, including 21 Days Dry-Aged Sanzhou Goose Breast Paella (HK$428), 21 Days Dry-Aged Sanzhou Goose Confit Paella (HK$428), 14 Days Dry-Aged French Quail (HK$258), and 50 Days Butter Dry-Aged U.S. Prime Striploin (HK$548).

KILO Steakhouse

Having only freshly opened its doors for business on Sept. 29, KILO is a sparkling new American steakhouse concept brought to the Victoria Harbour-facing K11 Musea mall by Octavo Management Group. Acclaimed chef Nathan Green takes the lead as executive chef, bringing his magic touch that had sprinkled influence all over 22 Ships, Ham & Sherry, Rhoda, and Rex Wine & Grill. The steakhouse focuses on presenting quality meats from international sources in their meatiest forms and is now open for dinner service exclusively by appointment.
