A less than half-hour ferry ride from the main city, Lamma Island is Hong Kong’s answer to locals and expats looking to escape the hustle and noise often seen in Central or Kowloon. This laidback island—the third-largest in Hong Kong—is home to a myriad of cute café, seafood restaurants, and boho-inspired specialty stores that make for a rustic weekend getaway. It is comprised of two villages: Yung Shue Wan to the north where hippie stores dot the place and Sok Kwu Wan to the east where authentic seafood restaurants run aplenty.

If you’re thinking about having a day trip, consider dropping by these cute café on Lamma Island.

Banyan Bay Café

The sweet aroma of breakfast staples wafting through the air lures unknowing passers-by to this cozy café. As fans of all-day breakfast restos, we love the Banyan Bay Big Breakfast platter (HK$90), which consists of eggs, bacon, sausage, grilled tomato, mushroom, baked beans, multigrain toast, and housed tea and coffee. They also have decent items for vegetarians such as Greek Salad (HK$82), Smoked Salmon Salad (HK$84), and Sandwiches Made With Multigrain Bread (HK$48; any two fillings).

Shelly Cake Express

If, like us, you’re a sweet-tooth, then we’re sure you’d enjoy anything Shelly Cake Express has to offer. From a slice of cake to a scoop of handmade artisan gelato, this shop will surely satiate your cravings for desserts. If you’re counting calories, we recommend their tofu cake!

Bookworm Café

If there’s one café that we think best represents Lamma Island’s hippie vibe, it should be Bookworm Café. Founded by known environment advocate Bobsy Gaia, this café is known for their plant-based dishes that are bound to satisfy the hunger of every vegetarian. It’s hard to pick a favorite from their menu, but we think their clam pasta with white wine sauce is a good reason to go back. Oh, and this place doubles as a second-hand bookstore!

Rawsoever

This vegan café on Lamma Island serves up delicious plant-based dishes minus the guilt. We recommend their Matcha Mousse Cake and Organic Turmeric Golden Milk. They also sell raw vegan supplies and other eco-friendly products in their grocery section.
