Itching to see some art exhibits around Hong Kong? The past year has seen us indoors for much of the time due to COVID-19, which, for many of us art lovers, was surely a disappointment for while viewing art through digital means was possible, it still couldn’t replicate the actual feeling of being in an actual museum or gallery. The new year, however, has started off promisingly, with new places to see and old favorite ones to revisit.

For your much-needed dose of art this January 2022, we recommend you go gallery-hopping and check out these four art exhibits in Hong Kong!

"Precious Ones: Tibetan Tulkus," on show at the Rossi & Rossi gallery until Jan. 29, is a series of photographs of Tibetan "tulkus" taken by the late British-Belgian photographer Martine Franck. Apart from the photographs, a selection of bronzes and paintings depicting Buddhist spiritual masters are also on exhibit. A "tulku," which literally translates to "phantom body," is a revered lama or guru in Tibetan tradition, with the Dalai Lamas Panchen Lamas, and Tibet rulers considered as tulkus.

"Precious Ones" is "a rare glimpse into the depiction of Tibetan spiritual guides. Their unique practice, which involves repeated reincarnation, has spread both their teachings and their benevolence."

Shannon Cartier Lucy's "A Stapled Glass" is on exhibit at the Massimo De Carlo art gallery in Central. It is Lucy's first solo exhibition in Hong Kong and encompasses the "ordinary and absurd, comfortable and uncomfortable, ironic and disturbing." It consists of seven new paintings created in 2021 that are akin to the aesthetics of 17th century Baroque master painters, and features "familiar but bizarre" images such as a woman stretching her back and stapled glass, among others.

Location: 12 Pedder Street - 3F Pedder Building, Central

The Gagosian gallery along Pedder Street in Central is exhibiting ten new paintings from Jonas Wood until Jan. 15. The exhibition, Wood's first solo one in Hong Kong, is a venture into Wood's colourful and vibrant motifs of fruits, flowers, and houseplants, from orchids and succulents to bananas and monstera plants.

According to the Gagosian, Wood "uses plants as a vehicle to experiment with color and geometry, isolating the forms on monochromatic backgrounds to explore color theory, pattern, and line."
