Victor Shaw’s Collection of Jade Part One to be Auctioned Online late Feb

Victor Vee Shek Shaw (1935-2020) of the Shaw family was a lifelong collector of Chinese art. Asides from his discerning eye, the Shaw family is known in Hong Kong for their undying philanthropy to the arts and education across the world.

From a young age, Victor Shaw began assembling his jade collection which he started in 1960. Spanning from Six Dynasties (220-589) to the Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1991), Part One of the online series offers over 70 pieces of jade carvings.

As a reflection of Victor’s five decades of acquisition, experience, and dedication; this collection is a testament to his inner spirit and life’s work.

Animals

Animals are a common subject for jade carvings, conveying philosophical and political meanings through visual language of wordplay and cultural contexts. The current selection of animal carvings in Part One Shaw’s jade series offers a journey of craftsmanship throughout the dynasties.

The division of animal carvings from domestic animals, to wild animals, and mythical creatures; each bound to special motifs and places within the universe – as dictated by Chinese cosmology.

Literati Playthings and Ornaments

In Confucian tradition, jade acts a symbol of virtues which were highly regarded in the literati circle. Used as ornaments for every-day objects and personal ornaments as symbols of status and literati aesthetics.
