SMART Tunnel Closed to Make Way for Flood Operations

SMART Tunnel Operations Halted to Give Way for Flood Repairs

The SMART Tunnel has been closed for operation to prepare for further flooding events. The tunnel operator, Syarikat Mengurus Air Banjir dan Terowong Sdn Bhd (SMART), made the announcement via Twitter on Dec. 10 after receiving word from the Department of Irrigation and Drainage at 07:13 PM on the same day.

In a different post related to the tunnel’s closing, SMART said “Mode 3 has been activated. In this mode, the tunnel is closed to traffic by the SMART Traffic Control Centre and floodwaters are still being diverted.”

The federal capital of Malaysia is susceptible to flash flooding, which the SMART Tunnel was supposed to address upon completion. The main issue, according to the SMART tunnel website, is the inadequate drainage systems that surround the tunnel and not the tunnel itself. There have been suggestions to build other SMART Tunnels in areas like Temerloh, Bentong, and Mentakab in Pahang.

On Dec. 16, 2021, a tropical depression in the eastern part of Malaysia resulted to flash floods that hit the Klang Valley and other areas in the country.
