Macau Hotel Occupancy Rate Hits 74% in Jan, Average Room Rates Also Rise

Macau’s occupancy rate for all hotel types showed a year-on-year (YoY) increase of 25.4 percentage points, jumping to 74% in January versus 48.7% in 2022. The average room rate also rose by 41.8% YoY or MOP1,181, as indicated in the 2023 Tourism Statistics report of Macao Government Tourism Office released on Feb. 24.
The occupancy rate of five-star hotels rose to 73.9% versus 46.1% in the previous year, while four-star hotels soared to 70.1% from 58.4%. Three-star hotels had the highest jump to 79% compared to 52.2% in 2022.
Moreover, four-star hotels registered the highest increase of 81.2% (MOP806.5), while the figures for all types of hotels rose from MOP832 to MOP1,180 or 41.8% increase YoY.
As a result of the lifted pandemic restrictions and Lunar New Year celebration, the number of tourists who visited Macau in January reached a total of 1,397,748 or 259% higher month-on-month in December 2022 based on the Tourism Overview report.
