Welcome to the 34th edition of the Macao Arts Festival, themed around "wondrous encounters" that bridge the fantastical with the innovative. Set in the vibrant cultural landscape of Macao, this festival offers an eclectic program that promises to enchant, challenge, and transform audiences from all walks of life.
The festival kicks off with a grand opening featuring Akram Khan's reimagined "Jungle Book," exploring themes of survival from a child's perspective through exceptional dance and choreography. The adventure continues with "Duck Pond," a circus extravaganza inspired by Tchaikovsky and Andersen, brought to life by the Australian troupe Circa known for their stunning acrobatics.
Delve into the contemporary with Marcos Morau's post-modern take on "Sleeping Beauty," and experience the intense drama of "Macbettu," a Sardinian rendition of Shakespeare's "Macbeth" with a unique all-male cast. Not to be missed is the innovative "The Chairs" by Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe, merging Chinese opera with Ionesco’s absurdist theater, alongside "Under the Pagoda Tree," a fresh Cantonese opera that revisits traditional art forms with modern flair.
Local talents shine throughout the festival, presenting works that reflect Macao’s rich cultural tapestry. Highlights include "Impression of Iec Long," a play set in a former firecracker factory, and "She Said," a dance theater piece integrating Chinese opera to explore women’s autonomy.
Complementing the performances, the festival also features folk showcases, a special exhibition on art integration between China and the West, and selected screenings of international stage productions, enriching the cultural experience for all attendees.
Join us at the 34th Macao Arts Festival to witness the convergence of creativity and culture in a celebration that transcends boundaries. It’s not just a festival; it’s a journey of discovery, inspiration, and sublime artistic expression.
