Filipinos will head to the polls on May 9 in what political experts call a high-stakes election. The chaos and noise on the national level tend to overshadow other positions in the government that, while not as equally powerful as the executive positions or as impactful as the local roles—will help spell what’s ahead of us in the next few years.

Enter party-lists. Of the 270 groups that submitted their nominees during the filing of the Certificate of Candidacy last October 2021, only 178 of them have been given the greenlight to join the 2022 polls. Given the crowded race, you might wonder: Does a party-list even make a tangible impact?

For context, of the 70 representatives who voted to reject TV network ABS-CBN’s franchise bid in 2020, 13 were from a party-list. That’s 13 politicians whose decision led to the unemployment of about 11,000 employees in the middle of a pandemic. So, one can say that yes, being a party-list representative is pretty powerful.

To help you decide in the lead up to the elections, The Beat Asia came up with frequently asked questions on the Philippines’ party-list system.
