PH Universities Commemorate 50th Anniversary of Martial Law Declaration

On Sept. 21, Filipinos commemorated the 50th anniversary of Martial Law declaration by the late dictator Ferdinand E. Marcos. Victims recalled their struggles during this bleak chapter in Philippine history.

The De La Salle University (DLSU) lit up St. La Salle Hall on Tuesday while playing the song “Bayan Ko” as part of its commemoration ahead of the Martial Law anniversary.

DLSU Professor Richie Yap tweeted a video that featured the façade of the campus together with a lightshow that flashes every 30 minutes, along with a caption from the popular patriotic song.

Meanwhile, Ateneo de Manila University organized a concert titled “Mga Tinig ng Pagtindig” at Areté Ubuntu Lobby from 5 PM to 6:30 PM yesterday.

The University of the Philippines’ Department of History, on the other hand, held a Historians’ Meet, which discussed the relevance of history as well as the means to combat disinformation and historical revision.

Moreover, former senator Bam Aquino and human rights lawyer Chel Diokno uploaded videos on their respective social media accounts, showing important historical events that transpired before and during Marcos Sr.’s regime.
