Holiday Fashion Advice from Celebrity Designer, Debbie Co
The Philippines has the longest holiday season of any country in the world. While other populations concern themselves over Halloween and Thanksgiving, we Pinoys begin hanging up our Christmas wreaths in September. This festive spirit is further embodied by the fashionable wardrobes of local Pinays.
Who doesn’t love a beautifully sequined dress, an embroidered top, or even a puffy ball skirt? As people gear up for the usual slew of holiday parties and invites, it’s become clear to all: perhaps our everyday wardrobe is simply not enough during the “-ber” months.
Enter: Debbie Co, the celebrity fashion designer known for dressing the likes of Rhian Ramos and Maxene Magalona. The fashion designer’s signature feminine style sees plenty of play between textures and fabrics, bringing floral designs and hand-sewn beadwork to life.
“I started out as an industrial engineer [working at Nestle], so I feel like my [creative] process is a bit different,” Debbie shared. “I love playing with light textures and usually start by sourcing good fabrics.”
Having recently opened her prêt-à-porter pop-up on the 2nd floor of Greenbelt 5, Debbie shares that it is her goal to make holiday dressing easy for everyone.
“I wanted [the clothes off my Holiday collection] to be easy and functional for my customers,” she said. “Because who even has time to go home and change between all the Christmas parties?”
With racks of clothes set against pristine white walls, Debbie’s Holiday collection stands out even further with fabrics and textures that pop: there are light tweed bow tops, matching appliqued coordinates, and plenty of lace and gold thread.
She predicts that in the last quarter of 2024, versatility will be key, particularly for busy women with a full social calendar. Statement tops will definitely be the ultimate go-to piece. “[Statement tops] can go from day to night, depending on how you style it,” she pointed out. “Wear it with jeans for a casual get-together or with slacks for something more formal. If you pair it with a ball skirt, you can even pass off as a wedding guest!”
Debbie also recommended wearing light fabrics; though she’d studied fashion design in the temperate city of London – at Central Saint Martins – the designer admits that dressing for Philippine weather is a different consideration. But don’t worry, the designer shares that Filipinos still have plenty of choices despite the humidity.
“Some people think, for example, that we can’t wear tweed here because it’s too hot. But I have some pieces in my Holiday collection that are made from lighter tweed, so you still get that look and texture, but with a more comfortable sensation.”
It's particularly helpful that Debbie Co’s latest pop-up finds a home in Greenbelt 5. Here, anyone can drop in for a quick little shopping spree. And while the designer’s brides and VIP guests usually head to her atelier in Proscenium, Rockwell, those needing a quick outfit change can drop by for some prêt-à-porter goodness at the mall.
“Ready to wear is more convenient and accessible for people, and we’re able to reach a wider audience while we’re here [in Greenbelt 5],” Debbie pointed out. “While the clothes at our atelier are more intricate, the aesthetic and quality are still present in our prêt-à-porter collection.”
For a truly memorable celebration – and photos to boot – there really is no better choice than Debbie Co. Having navigated the industry for over 15 years, Debbie’s creations and signature style have become something of a legacy for many women.
“I’ve designed prom dresses for teenagers whose mothers were also my brides,” Debbie shared happily. “I feel like I've grown up with them and I’m very grateful that I get to empower people through my career.”
