The Cathay Cineplex will shut down its outlet along Handy Road after June 26 as foot traffic in the cinema has declined in recent years.
"The cinema’s closure was a business decision. Over the years, retail traffic demographics have changed. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our cinema patrons, studio partners and suppliers for their continued support,” said Chang Long Jong, group CEO for mm2 Asia, which operates Cathay Cineplexes in Singapore.
Movie theatres are one of the hardest-hit industries in Singapore due to COVID-19. After several months of total closure, cinemas had to struggle with a limited capacity as an indoor venue.
Cathay Cineplex said all its other branches will operate as usual. The Handy Road outlet has been operating since 1939, making it one of the oldest cinemas in the city-state. It was also the first air-conditioned movie theatre in Singapore.
