Mexican Sergio Perez Finished First in the F1 Singapore Grand Prix Despite Safety Car Penalty

Mexican Sergio Michel “Checo” Pérez Mendoza finished first in the 2022 F1 Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday, Oct. 2, as he took the chequered flag 7.5 seconds ahead of the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc.

“I really needed this moment!! We won and put our country where it belongs!! Excellent team work Oracle Red Bull Racing,” Perez said in a Facebook post.

It was an eventful moment for the Red Bull driver as he crossed the finish line, but he had to wait for a while for the confirmation of his victory. This is in light of a post-race investigation into an alleged Safety Car infringement, or failing to keep within 10 car lengths of the Safety Car during caution periods. Perez was ultimately given a five-second penalty, which meant he still bagged his fourth career win.

This year’s grand prix was the first to be held at the Marina Bay Street Circuit since 2019 following a two-year cancellation due to COVID-19 pandemic-related concerns. Unfortunately, the much-awaited race was delayed for an hour due to heavy rains. This weather situation changed the game for all drivers, as a few have committed errors due to the road’s slippery surface.
