Commonwealth Games: S’pore Wins Badminton Gold

S’porean Husband-Wife Duo Wins Badminton Mixed Doubles First-Ever Gold at 2022 Commonwealth Games

Husband-and-wife duo Terry Hee (27) and Jessica Tan (29) bagged Singapore’s first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medal in the Mixed Doubles event, and the second gold for badminton. The first gold medal was snatched by Li Li’s historic win in the Women’s Singles title back in Manchester 2002.

The duo defeated England’s Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith 21-16, 21-15 in the finals. The Singaporean pair is rank number 35, while the English pair is rank number 10 in the world.

“We’re really happy about our performance today. I think we put up a really solid fight against our opponents,” Tan said in an interview.

“They really put up a much stronger fight and give us a pretty hard time. But we’re really glad that we came out on top and came out as the winners,” she added.

“Actually, I’m still… I can’t believe we are the Commonwealth Games gold medallists right now. But we are just really proud and happy to be here,” Hee said.

The Commonwealth Games is an international multisport event for the members of the Commonwealth of Nations. It was held at Birmingham, England this year from July 28 to Aug. 8.
