A New Hawker Centre in Sembawang Finally Opens, Its First in 30 Years
A new hawker centre in Sembawang has finally opened to the public last week after an almost three-year delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s the first of its kind in the area in nearly 30 years.
Located in Bukit Canberra, a 12-hectare integrated sports and community hub, the new hawker centre consists of 44 stalls and over 800 seats. It features a tropical thematic interior design to blend with the hub’s nature-inspired theme and to give it a “food in a park” atmosphere.
“Hawker centres are an institution in Singapore. It is our heritage and also part of our future. I am really happy that Sembawang is now part of the story,” Health Minister Ong Ye Kung, who’s also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sembawang Group Representation Constituency (GRC) since 2015, said in a Facebook post.
The minister adds that diners can now enjoy a wide variety of food and features, such as a calorie count on the menu, an electronic system for ordering, and a “belanja a meal” (a pay it forward system) to the less fortunate members of the community.
The new Bukit Canberra hawker centre is nestled between the Sembawang and Canberra MRT stations and is open daily from 7 AM to 11 PM. For more details, visit their website or Facebook.
