Paddlers Rescue Critically Endangered Hawksbill Sea Turtle, Urges Public to Stop Using Gill Nets

A sub-adult hawksbill sea turtle was rescued by a group of stand-up paddlers last Nov. 25 at the East Coast. The sub-adult turtle was entangled in a gill net, an “indiscriminate fishing gear” that can kill every sea creature, especially marine mammals.

Earlier this year, another critically endangered hawksbill sea turtle was found dead near Pulau Hantu for being drowned and choked by a gill net, and around 12 young black-tipped reef sharks near Pulau Semakau were also killed by a 500-metre long gill net.

The Singapore Stand Up Paddling (SUP) organisation reminded the public through a Facebook post to help protect marine life by stopping the use of gill nets and engaging in responsible fishing habits instead.
