Hungry for a Sustainable Lifestyle Here Are Food Waste Solution Apps in Singapore to Download Right Now

The culture of throwing away food is not an exciting topic as it has a significant impact on our savings and our planet. Food waste or losses is defined as edible food fit for consumption but go uneaten due to issues in production, storage, processing, and distribution.

According to a report from BBC News, a study from the United Nations found that almost one-third of the world’s produce are discarded carelessly. In Singapore, the amount of food waste generated in 2019 reached about 744 million kilograms or is equivalent to 51,000 double-decker buses.

But the good news is that some brands and companies are upping their game to combat this problem. Through innovative solutions and technology, here are some food waste solution apps in Singapore you may download to save cash and the environment.

Treatsure

Launched in 2017, treatsure is a startup company and a food waste solution app with the aim to lessen food wastage through technology.

Treatsure is Singapore's first mobile reservation application that connects businesses and hotels with surplus food to local communities, treating food as treasures.

The brainchild of two friends (Preston and Kenneth), treatsure was developed after Preston realised that the consumable expiring food that his family throws might be redistributed for others’ consumption. They offer islandwide delivery on selected days and self pickup at their concept store located on Robinson Rd.

Some available items on their website are plant-based food, beverages, dairy products, fruits and vegetables, chocolates, sustainable seasoning, reusable containers, and more. Treatsure can be downloaded via Google Play and the App store.

Olio

Olio is a British company and a food waste solution app that collaborated with one of Singapore’s leading online grocery stores in March 2022 to help reduce surplus food that end up in landfills in the city-state.

The partnership includes perishable goods with near expiry dates or minimal packaging defects to be collected by Olio volunteers. These consumables will be uploaded on the app and distributed to certain households and community groups free of charge.

The app is committed to “share more, care more and waste less.” Using this app, you can give and receive free food while saving our planet. You can share anything edible, whether it’s loose, raw, cooked, opened, or unopened.

To share your surplus food, take a photo of the item and pin the pickup location (can be at your home or a public location). You can also check and verify the people you want to share with.

Olio also encourages caterers, hotels, restaurants, offices, retailers, or any other food businesses or providers to donate or share their surplus food to be picked up and safely arranged by Olio’s volunteers available 24/7.

You may download the app via Google Play and App Store.

Makan Rescue

Created by students and staff from Singapore’s top universities (National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, and Singapore Management University), Makan Rescue was developed to notify app users of nearby food surpluses.

For food business owners, Makan Rescue can help minimise your food waste, offering different options for payment methods.

Get Makan Rescue on Google Play and the App Store.
