As 2021 draws to a close, Twitter compiled a list of the top trending stories in Singapore that kept us all abuzz with chit-chats in the past 12 months. The results are based on internal data from Singapore-based users taken between Jan. 1 and Nov. 15, 2021.

From the noise surrounding NFTs and bitcoin to Squid Game’s overnight success, here are the topics that kept digital nomads up for this year.

Most Tweeted About Hashtags

Since formally launching in 2009, Twitter hashtags have become a barometer of what’s trending in the world of social media. Unsurprisingly, #COVID19 remains on top of Singaporeans’ online conversations, along with #bitcoin and #tokyo2020. Pop culture also takes the centrestage, thanks to the ascent to fame of Korean survival drama #squidgame and American mini TV series #wandavision. There also seems to be a lot of talk about #sustainability, with brands taking on initiatives to lessen their carbon footprint.

Most Tweeted About Entertainment Hashtags

Animes dominated the entertainment department of Singapore’s Twitterverse, with Japanese manga series “Jujutsu Kaisen” and action role-playing videogames “Genshin Impact” and “Grand Blue Fantasy” among the trending topics. Of course, Korean titles have their share of the pie, with “Vincenzo” and “Squid Game” included in the 10 most tweeted about hashtags in entertainment.

Most Tweeted About K-Pop Hashtags

Known for having a battalion of members who can easily make their idols trend, K-pop fans are one of the biggest and most active niche groups on Twitter (or frankly, on any other social media platform). Hence, it’s no wonder that Twitter devoted an entire section to all the trending hashtags related to K-pop. #BTS, which just capped off their first in-person concert series since the pandemic, is among the most talked about, along with Exo, Twice, and Enhyphen.
