Olympic medalist PV Sindhu from India won her first Super 500 trophy after defeating defending champion Whang Zi Yi in a three-set badminton game during the Singapore Open tournament on Sunday, July 17.
After a grueling battle between Sindhu and Yi, the final score line read 21-9, 11-21, and 21-15 in favour of the 27-year-old Indian athlete. “And the champ brings good news to India and makes us proud once again! PV Sindhu defeats China’s Whang Zi Yi to clinch her maiden #SingaporeOpen2022,” said Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra in a tweet.
This marks Sindu’s third title of the year and first Super 500 win of her career. She has previously bagged two Super 300 titles from Syed Modi International and Swiss Open, defeating compatriot Malvika Bansod and Thailand’s Busanan Ongbangrungphan, respectively.
Sindhu's next tournament will be at the Commonwealth Games 2022, which will be held in Birmingham on July 28.
