Breakfasts Made Better: Here's Where to Get Kaya Toast in Singapore
Ask any Singaporean what they want to have for breakfast and you’re most likely to get the same answer. Kaya toast, along with soft-boiled eggs and kopi (coffee), is a breakfast staple in the city-state and it’s unlikely to sweep a neighbourhood without seeing at least one establishment that sells this crowd fave. The problem is, though, it becomes difficult to decide where to get one. Fret not because we’ve listed below the most-trusted places that locals frequent. Check them out!
Ya Kun Kaya Toast
When we say kaya toast, it has to be the proven and tested flavours of Ya Kun Kaya Toast. Established in 1944, they're the largest kaya toast chain in Singapore for a reason! You can never go wrong with their signature homemade kaya and butter, which commits to their roots. We recommend ordering their Kaya Peanut Toast Set (S$5.60), Kaya Butter Toast Set (S$5.60), or Smoked Cheese French Toast Set (S$6.00) to pair your toast with kopi and soft-boiled eggs. While you’re at it, you might also want to take home a Kaya Jar (290 grams) so you can have the same great taste at home.

Toast Box
Toast Box may be a baby compared to Ya Kun, but they have one thing in common: they’re everywhere and not easy to miss. Established in 2005, Toast Box is a concept under the BreadTalk Group that mainly serves Nanyang kopi and kaya toast. For starters, we suggest trying their Kaya, Butter Sugar, and Peanut Butter in traditional or thick toast. You also have a choice between white and multi-grain bread, which is a good alternative if you’re seeking a healthier option. Don’t forget to order an aromatic cup of their freshly brewed Kopi-O or Kopi-C too! If you fancy something cold, their Ice Kopi Melaka can also give your much-needed caffeine fix.

Coffee & Toast
Coffee & Toast was established in 2005 with the goal to serve delicious traditional breakfast in a cosy environment, and that’s just what they did. Choose between their traditional Kaya Butter Toast Set (S$5.30) and Kaya Butter Bun Set (S$5.30) for a kind serving of toast, two soft-boiled eggs, and a choice of hot drink. If you want to try something different, you can also get their English Muffin Kaya Butter (S$2.80). Along with their halal subsidiary Kaffe & Toast, the café has evolved into offering all-day dining favourites, such as chicken rendang, mee rebus, and laksa. There’s no need to go far if you want something heavier for breakfast or if you’re looking for a good spot to eat brunch!

Chin Mee Chin Confectionery
Chin Mee Chin Confectionery is a trusted neighbourhood name when it comes to baked goods, having been in business since 1925. After they sadly closed in 2018 due to manpower issues and lack of succession, they have reopened in 2021 to welcome a new chapter. This means we can order their Kaya Toast Set (S$4.90) again! Who can forget their signature kaya in charcoal-roasted buns. Serve that with a generous slab of butter, two soft-boiled eggs, and a drink and your breakfast is complete. If you’re not in the mood for coffee, you can get their Lemon Tea (S$1.80) or Milo (S$1.90) and Iced Milo Dinosaur (S$3.40) for something sweet.

YY Kafei Dian
Located at the corner of Beach Road and Purvis Street, YY Kafei Dian is a casual eatery where you can start your day with their freshly baked Kaya Buns. Yes, you read that right. While kaya toast is traditionally known for using flat bread, YY Kafei Dian offers them in buns that are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Apart from this, they also offer a range of Hainanese cuisine, such as Hainan braised pork belly, chicken rice, Hainanese-style pork chops, and other zi char options, for those who want a heavy meal. Remember to be there early because the queue gets long in the morning!
Location: YY Kafei Dian Singapore, #01-01, 37 Beach Rd.
