5 Spots in Singapore to Eat Authentic Nasi Lemak Dishes

Singaporean cuisine is the product of Chinese, Indonesian, Indian, and Malaysian influences. No wonder why many Singaporeans love this Malaysian staple called nasi lemak.

Originated in Malaysia, nasi lemak is an all-day meal made with coconut milk, sambal, egg (fried or hard-boiled), peanuts, anchovies, shrimp paste, and other condiments.

Generally, nasi lemak is wrapped in a pyramid-shaped banana leaf paired with fried chicken, fish, and a lot more.

From traditional recipes to a fresh twist, we’ve listed some of the food establishments that serve this popular dish around the Lion City.

Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak @ Taman Jurong

Boon Lay Power has been offering authentic nasi lemak in Singapore since 1971. The restaurant is known for its fresh ingredients and good-quality coconut oil used in its signature Chicken Set (made with chicken wing, ikan bilis, sambal, and a fried egg).

Other nasi lemak meals you should try are the Selar Kunning set, Otah Otah set, Fish Fillet set, Paru set, Ayam Berempah set, and more. Group packages that cater to around five to 50 persons are also available for as low as S$26.40.

The place is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:30 AM to 4 PM only.

Plus, each nasi lemak dish is served with favourite Malaysian side dishes such as sambal sotong (squid in stir-fried chili paste) or sambal kerang (cockles in stir-fried chili paste).

We recommend trying Uptown’s signature dish Nasi Lemak with Ayam Goreng Berempah, as well as the traditional family recipe, Nasi Lemak with Kapitan Chicken. To view the restaurant’s all-day menu, go here.
