The FIDE World Chess Championship 2024 makes its historic return to Southeast Asia, hosted at Resorts World Sentosa, Singapore from Nov. 25 to Dec. 13, 2024. This landmark event is the first in 138 years to feature two Asian contestants, with reigning World Champion Ding Liren of China facing Dommaraju Gukesh from India, the youngest challenger in history at just 18 years old.
A landmark partnership with Google as title sponsor underscores the global significance of this prestigious event, with contestants competing for a US$2.5 million prize fund. The match follows the best-of-14 classical games format, featuring a time control of 120 minutes for the first 40 moves, with an increment of 30 seconds per move starting from move 41. If tied after 14 games, thrilling tie-breaks will decide the victor.
This is only the second time the World Championship is hosted in Southeast Asia, after Baguio in 1978. Set against the luxurious backdrop of Resorts World Sentosa, fans can anticipate an unforgettable battle between chess titans, as Ding Liren aims to cement his legacy while Gukesh strives to make history.
