Omani Tourist Confirmed as 12th Monkeypox Case in Thailand
The Diseases Control Department confirmed on Monday, Oct. 24, the 12th case of monkeypox in Thailand. The patient is a 25-year-old tourist from Oman who visited Phuket’s entertainment districts with three friends.
The tourist presented with symptoms including fever, cough, headache, and blisters on his body and genitals. He was put under medical observation at a hospital in Pa Tong area.
Contact tracing and investigation is underway for the three close contacts of the patient. To date, all of them have not shown any symptoms.
The latest patient is not the first tourist from the Middle East to have monkeypox. Another case was reported last month involving a 23-year-old male from Qatar.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there have been 75,568 monkeypox cases across the globe and a total of 34 deaths as of Oct. 25.
