Child Abuse Cases in Singapore Continue to Increase After a Decade
On April 11, the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) released its updated data showing a dramatic spike in Singapore's child abuse cases in 2020 after a decade, followed by another surge of cases investigated in 2021.
It appears that the sharp increase of child abuse cases last year was recorded after launching the National Anti-Violence Helpline (NAVH) in February. The hotline has helped the public to promptly report family violence, abuse, and neglect.
In 2021, the total number of cases investigated rose by 63% to 2,141 from 1,313 in 2020. Cases of physical abuse last year reached 788, while 443 suffered from sexual abuse, and 910 were involved in child neglect.
Aside from the actual incidents, the total number of investigated cases includes referrals from MSF’s Child Protective Service (CPS) in the community.
For enqueries or concerns regarding abuse, you may call NAVH 24/7 helpline at 1800-777-0000.
