LTA: New Cycling Paths to Be Constructed in Seven Towns From 2024

New cycling paths will be progressively constructed and completed in seven towns in Singapore from 2024, namely Geylang, Hougang, Kaki Bukit, Marine Parade, Potong Pasir, Sengkang, and Serangoon.

According to a press release by the Land Transport Authority on Jan. 12, the new paths are part of the next phase of the statutory board's Islandwide Cycling Network (ICN) programme. In preparation for the paths' infrastructure, existing footpaths will be widened to allow more space for Singaporeans to cycle and walk. The LTA added that road space may be reused, and drains and bus stops adjusted due to limitations in space.

The LTA's ICN programme was introduced during the first pandemic year in 2020 in a bid to expand Singapore's cycling path network to about 1,300 kilometres by 2030 and allow eight out of 10 residents of the Housing and Development Board to be minutes away from their cycling path network.

The ICN has around 530 kilometres today, after more than 30 kilometres of cycling paths were just finished in Ang Mo Kio, Bishan, the Central Business District, Taman Jurong, Tampines, and Toa Payoh, while more paths are currently being built in Bishan, Bukit Panjang, Choa Chu Kang, Toa Payoh, and Woodlands.

Singapore has around 254,000 bicycle parking spots at present, with the LTA planning to build an added 3,000 at MRT stations by 2025.
