Singapore to Import Chicken Eggs From Brunei to Diversify Supply

Singapore will begin importing chicken eggs from Brunei, bringing the number of countries recognised as egg export sources to the city-state to 17.

The announcement came from Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu amid her visit to Golden Chick Livestock Farm Sdn Bhd in Brunei yesterday, as per the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) on the same day. Golden Chick is the first-ever Bruneian farm to export eggs to Singapore. In 2019, there were only 12 countries and regions accredited to export chicken eggs to the city-state.

This recent move to accredit Brunei as a new source of chicken eggs further strengthens bilateral trade relations and food cooperation between the two countries.

Around 70% of Singapore's egg supply comes from imports and expanding it has helped the city-state ride out supply disruptions from disease and geopolitical issues, the SFA said. Other egg sources include Thailand, Australia, Spain, and Poland, which comprised 18% of Singapore's supply in 2021 alone.

The remaining 30% of Singapore's egg supply comes from local production, and efforts to strengthen its local egg supply are underway with the development of a fourth egg farm. Once fully operational, the SFA said Singapore's egg farms will be able to meet 50% of the city-state’s demand.
