Singapore’s Dengue Cases Shoot Up Even Before Peak Season
Singapore has recorded more than 6,000 dengue cases so far this year, exceeding the total for 2021 even before the traditional peak season of the disease begins.
There were 941 dengue cases recorded in the week ended April 23, 208 cases more than in the previous week, the National Environment Agency (NEA) reported on April 28.
The alarming increase in dengue cases comes even before the expected peak season from June to October.
The NEA noted that most mosquito breeding can be found in homes. It is urging occupants and occupiers of premises to “Do the Mozzie Wipeout regularly, to remove any stagnant water in their immediate surroundings and destroy any mosquito breeding habitats found, to help break the cycle of dengue transmission as quickly as possible.”
As of 26 April 2022, there are 193 active dengue clusters reported.
The NEA is working with stakeholders to conduct intensive vector control operations at these clusters to prevent the further spread of the disease. Of the dengue clusters notified since the start of 2022, 67% or 394 have already been closed.
