Singapore Grand Prix 2022 Rolls Out Sustainability Initiatives to Achieve Carbon Neutrality

The Formula One Singapore Grand Prix (GP) returns to the city-state to race sustainably by launching a series of green initiatives with the goal of lowering the amount of greenhouse gas emissions from the event.

The pit building, grandstands, hospitality suites, activity areas in Zone 1, as well as the food and beverage locations on the circuit will be completely powered by carbon-neutral sources of energy, according to a report from The Straits Times on Sept. 28.

Power companies, Geneco and Flo Energy, provided renewable energy certificates to “represent units of electricity generated from renewable energy generation facilities.”

The Zone 4, where the Padang Grandstand is located, will be supported by generators powered by B7 biodiesel from local fuel distributor PS Energy Group.

The Grand Prix will also collaborate with Alpha Biofuels to conduct a trial run of the generator powered by B100 biodiesel, which is made from bio-based fuels. Similar to the previous race in 2019, the Singapore-based company will collect cooking oil again from participating F&B operators in the circuit to be recycled into biodiesel.

Moreover, the installation of solar panels for the pit building’s roof and on-track LED lighting for the 2023 race edition are in the pipeline, Singapore GP Director of Marketing, Privacy and Sustainability Sasha Rafi said via The Straits Times.

On the other hand, Formula 1 Head of Sustainability Ellen Jones said the organization will maintain its commitment to “delivering more sustainable events and helping the sport achieve its goal of being Net Zero by 2030."
