Bang Sue Grand Station Renamed to ‘Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal’
Bang Sue Grand Station will change its name to Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, according to a contract the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) signed with Uniq Engineering and Construction (UNIQ). Apart from the name change, the contract also involves redesigning the SRT logo.
The state-owned rail operator reportedly approved a budget of THB33,169,726.39 to replace the signage on the station. Many officials are questioning the cost stated in the contract, however, leading to investigations to prove that there was no corruption involved. An official statement was also published on Facebook to clarify the issue.
His Majesty the King introduced the new name to the SRT in September 2022, as per a report by Thai PBS World. Krung Thep Aphiwat (กรุงเทพอภิวัฒน์) translates to “Bangkok’s prosperity.” The King also gave the names Nakhon Withi (นครวิถี) and Thani Ratthaya (ธานีรัถยา) to the Light Red Line and Dark Red Line suburban train services.
Located in Chatuchak, Bang Sue Grand Station opened in August 2021 as part of the operations of the SRT Red Lines. It also served as a COVID-19 vaccination centre from May 2021 to September 2022. On Jan. 19, the SRT will relocate 52 trains from Bangkok railway station (or unofficially known as the Hua Lamphong station) after its closure.
