HK Taxis Will Accept Digital Payments from Passengers Starting Jan. 25
Travel around Hong Kong seamlessly starting Jan. 25 with a new digital payment option for taxi rides.
With over 40,000 cabs in the city, roughly half of the driver count uses Octopus fare machines. Taxis with the said fare machines will soon be able to accept e-payments from customers by scanning QR codes.
With this new development, residents and visitors will soon be able to pay using UnionPay and Alipay. Don’t worry! Passengers with an Octopus card can also continue to tap and pay at the same Mobile POS.
According to Octopus Holdings Ltd., taxi drivers with an existing Octopus fare machine must update their Octopus App for Business on their mobile phones to take advantage of the new system.
To encourage more drivers to add cashless payment methods, Octopus Holdings Ltd. also announced that they will waive transaction fees for taxis until the year 2025. They also rolled out a referral programme, where drivers who successfully refer their peers will receive a HK$100 reward.
Explore the city and travel anywhere in Hong Kong you want without worrying about carrying enough cash.
