Disney Plus’s May line-up is looking relatively dry this year - but as fans will know, Disney has rarely concerned itself with matching the content push speeds of other streaming platforms.

With the ever-important official Star Wars Day celebrated in early-May, Disney has bigger fish to fry. Waving a lightsabre over it’s head like a torch showing the way, Disney Plus is planning to release two new Star Wars series to further expand its galactic influence (no, not in an ‘Empire Strikes Back’ sort of way).

Alongside the new Star Wars series stands rom-com film ‘Rye Lane’, coming of age series ‘American Born Chinese’, and a behind-the-scenes look at pop-artist Ed Sheeran with four-part documentary ‘Ed Sheeran: The Sum of it All’. Here’s our picks for the best Disney Plus series to stream right now.

Film

‘Rye Lane’

Rye Lane, located in the vibrant South London borough of Peckham, follows the journey of two young adults, Dom (David Jonsson) and Yas (Vivian Oparah), as they come together to heal from their recent heartbreaks.

Offering a refreshing and culturally unique perspective on the romantic comedy genre, ‘Rye Lane’ leans on witty humour and flavourful storytelling of heartbreak driven vengeance. As the characters devise their sweet revenge on their respective exes, the two grow to rely on each other for support and guidance, finding solace in each other along the process.

Series

‘Star Wars: Visions (Volume 2)’

As the Star Wars universe has expanded and grown more complex, the anthology series ‘Star Wars: Visions’ offers a welcome respite. In its second volume, the nine animated shorts capture the essence and themes of Star Wars while also showcasing the unique styles of animation studios from across the globe.

With different animation studios helming each episode, including animation greats such as Studio Mir, Studio D’art Shtajio, and Triggerfish, you can look forward to the intertwining anthologies of Star Wars shorts across the galaxy.

When: May 4

‘American Born Chinese’

Reuniting the Cast of ‘Everything, Everywhere, All at Once’, ‘American Born Chinese’ brings to life Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel of the same name. The series follows Jin (Ben Wang), a high school student struggling with typical teenage problems such as a shaky social life, unrequited love, and parents who don't understand him.

The plot thickens when Jin is assigned the task of showing new transfer student Wei-Chen (Jim Liu) around school. To his surprise, Wei-Chen is the son of the legendary Monkey King, Sun Wukong (Daniel Wu). As Jin tries to navigate his way through this new friendship, he finds himself embroiled in an otherworldly war that is plaguing the heavenly gods.

When: May 24

‘Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures’

Little lightsabres and the younglings that wield them are the new stars of Disney’s brand-new Star Wars show, made for their youngest audience yet. For the longest time, Star Wars spin-offs and series have avoided creating pre-school translations of the intricate and endless galaxy that the Star Wars-verse can offer.

Set in the High Republic era, this animated series follows Jedi younglings as they learn the ways of the Force, go on galaxy-wide adventures, and help those along the way – true to the Jedi code.

When: May 4

‘Ed Sheeran: The Sum of It All’

Watch the unfiltered behind-the-scenes documentary behind pop-artist Ed Sheeren’s personal life and music career throughout his latest world tour.

Through an awful quirk of fate, the documentary catches Ed at one of the most difficult years of his life – having lost a close friend and learning of his wife’s cancer diagnosis. On top of personal trials, Ed also had to defend a plagiarism copywrite court case over his 2017 hit ‘Shape of You’. ‘Ed Sheeran: The Sum of It All’ proves itself as a deeply intimate study of grief and challenges never seen before.

When: May 3

‘The Muppets Mayhem’

Adam F. Goldberg, Jeff Yorkes and Bill Barretta, are the masterminds behind Disney’s latest Muppet series, ‘The Muppets Mayhem’.

The story revolves around Nora (Lilly Singh), an assistant at a Hollywood record label desperate to find an act to nurture and break into the music scene. Nora discovers the zany Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem and finds promise in them, musical adventures ensue.
