Gov’t Sets Aug. 12 as National Thai Textile Day
The Thai government has designated Aug. 12 as the National Thai Textile Day in honor of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit.
The Queen Mother helped promote Thai traditional textiles, which were once threatened with extinction.
“With her hard work, Thai traditional textiles have become popular again, and this has led to employment and income generation for countless people, thus improving their quality of life,” the government said in a Facebook post on June 3.
"Thai fabric" pertains to a “fabric created from the heritage of Thai wisdom that has been passed on from generation to generation” and signifies a “feature of local identity that is produced in the country by Thai people, using various techniques and weaving methods, such as mudmee, batik, and matyom.”
Examples of natural fibers available in Thai localities are silk, cotton, hemp fiber, and pineapple.
The Thai government is encouraging the younger generation to promote Thai textiles and wear local brands that use Thai fabrics.
