Six Hong Kong Films Screened at International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia

Create Hong Kong, a government office dedicated to spearheading the creative industries, is working with the Hong Kong Economic Trade Office in Brussels (HKETO, Brussels), to support the 55th Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia.

The festival will run from Oct. 6 to 16, screening six Hong Kong productions and co-productions. Three films made in 2022 will be screened at the festival, including Wai Ka-fai’s action thriller “Detective vs. Sleuths”; Gilette Leung’s horror “Social Distancing”; and Fruit Chan, Fung Chi-chiang, Hoi Ip-sang’s “Tales from the Occult” of the same genre.

The three other films that will be featured were made in the 1990s, known as Hong Kong’s “Post-boom” era. These are Johnnie To’s “The Heroic Trio” (1993), Wong Gam-din’s “Portrait of Serial Rapist (1994) and “Shoot to Kill” (1994).

During the festival’s reception on Oct. 9, hosted by HKETO, Brussels, the films and productions were promoted to media representatives and film industry professionals.

Grace Li, deputy representative of HKETO, Brussels, noted in her welcoming remarks to the audience that films were much more than entertainment, but also a vehicle to bridge the gap between cultures. Li continued to say the Hong Kong government was committed to supporting Hong Kong film talents and the industry, and actively bringing Hong Kong productions around the world.

To highlight Hong Kong’s role as an East-meets-West centre for cultural exchange, Li encouraged audience members to visit Hong Kong and experience the city’s vibrant culture.
