El Taquero Opens in Wan Chai for a Taste of Mexico City Street-Eats
September 19, 2023
Dive into the bustling corner between Ship Street and Queen’s Road East and you'll discover a colourful corner that whisks you straight to Mexico City. Welcoming El Taquero, a tribute to modern Mexican dining the new concept dazzles with its vibrant coral-pink facade and a neon-glowing sign that’s hard to miss.
The restaurant's name, which translates to "the taco vendor", is well-deserved. As you step inside, the open kitchen immediately captures your attention. Here, the chefs prepare dishes with flair, using an authentic Mexican ‘trompo’ spit rotisserie to smoke the meats on a vertical rotation, under a thick layer of pineapple and onions.

At the helm of the culinary team is Executive Chef, Alejandro Ramírez Pérez. Trained at one of Mexico's premier culinary institutions and with experience from Michelin-starred El Bulli in Spain, Chef Alejandro brings a passionate touch to each dish, making you feel as if you've been personally invited to his family's kitchen.
"Our menu reflects traditional Mexican flavours and techniques. We take pride in sourcing our ingredients straight from the heart of Mexico, creating a truly authentic dining experience. We make our tortillas and salsa selection in-house daily and are excited to present the Trompo Al Pastor experience to Hong Kong diners," says Chef Alejandro.

Among the diverse array of dishes, the standout is the Al Pastor experience (HK$276 for 300g, HK$360 for 500g), a masterful presentation of marinated pork, slow cooked on the trompo and served with warm tortillas, alongside a medley of accompaniments.
Not to be outdone, the Fish Sayulita (HK$56) and Chapulines tacos (HK$46) offer unique flavours that will entice both the adventurous and the traditional food lover. And for those with a sweet tooth, the Churros (HK$68) and the Tres Leches Cake (HK$68) are a must-try.

To complete the experience, dive into El Taquero's drink menu. Their curated collection of tequilas and mezcals is complemented by iconic Mexican cocktails. Dive into El Taquero’s margarita range, whether it is in the form of a smoky Mezcal Margarita (HK$88), the herbaceous Sage Margarita (HK$88), the infused Hibiscus Margarita (HK$88), or the Bell Pepper Margarita (HK$88) with a kick.
