Cocktail Wiz Holly Graham on Asia's Vibrant Drinking Scene

Author of Cocktails of Asia Holly Graham on Her Love for Asias Drinking Scene

With an Asia set for a night-time revival and bars and clubs finally seeing life in Hong Kong in the new year, a passion has returned for drinking and the cocktail for many who have borne the brunt of the pandemic in the past two years.

One figure in the F&B space who is set to catalyse the resurgence of drinking in Asia is Holly Graham, managing editor of the continent’s leading bar industry platform, DRiNK Magazine, and author of “Cocktails of Asia: Regional Recipes and the Spirited Stories Behind Them,” a living memoir to the region’s iconic, beloved, and definitive cocktails.

Inside the 256-page love letter to cocktails birthed in Asia, Holly shares the precise recipes, funny tales, and storied history behind the cocktails, bars and people that comprise the boozy region.

The Beat Asia chatted with the veteran bartender, drinks writer, and cocktail lover in late May to discuss cocktails, drinking in Asia, what drives her passion for fruity alcohol, and Cocktails of Asia.

London-born-and-bred Holly has lived in the continent for 11 years and is eagerly counting, losing her accent and connection with her hometown of Leytonstone in east London. Graduating with a media degree in 2008, it was the global financial crash that forced her to her first pitstop in Asia, Thailand, to teach English.

As a native English speaker, Holly found teaching as an easy option to enter. Having never moved to Asia before and travelling to Thailand alone, Asia fit for her. After the mango state, she travelled to Seoul, Korea for two years to teach, before visiting Hong Kong during a travel break, which forced her to scour a position teaching here.

Holly was only able to locate a job teaching English in a kindergarten but had other plans for growing a career. “It was at that point that I realised I f*cking hate children.”

With blogging experience previously in Thailand, writing food, travel, and booze, she began freelancing for various publications building a portfolio. The “combination of talent and luck,” Holly described, brought her to the team at Time Out HK, writing pieces for the seasonal magazine.

At Time Out, she took over an editor’s role writing drink feature articles and bar reviews, meeting friendly bartenders, people in the space, and eventually her best friend, Beckaly Franks of Pontiac.

“[Beckaly] was my gateway drug into the industry, because we became really good friends. I saw how passionate she was and then a couple years later, I met my husband, who's also a bartender, so it was just around me all the time. I just found that they were my people, bartenders, we spoke the same language, we like the same stuff, and all have a love for getting sh*tfaced.”

Holly’s coveted position as the international managing editor of DRiNK Magazine came to conception during a 2016 trip with Beckaly to Shanghai, where the former was guest bartending at Union Trading Company. “That trip changed the course of my life.”

At 2 AM, Holly, on her birthday, and with an added level of hubris from the alcohol, met Theo Watt, the founder of DRiNK Magazine, introducing herself as a fangirl of the magazine and pitching her availability. “He said, ‘we're looking for people in Hong Kong,” and put me in touch with the editor in chief and started writing for them."

After leaving Time Out magazine, Holly began bartending at Old Man in a bid to locate her next writing gig. A position became available on the staff team at DRiNK Magazine as digital editor for a three-month maternity leave period and Holly moved in. “I knew they wouldn't get rid of me and [the editor] didn't come back. The editor in chief eventually moved back to the U.K., so it ended up just me [running it].”

Today, Holly covers the editorial of all reporting in Asia and beyond, journaling the industry’s innovative angle and community-led battle to produce great drinks and drum up hospitality. With a passion for travel and talking, Holly quickly became a name in the world drinking space, appointed as an Academy Chair for The World’s 50 Best Bars and Asia’s 50 Best Bars in late 2019 and sitting on the Education and Spirited Awards committees for Tales of the Cocktail.

It is Holly’s undying love for cocktails, for Asia, and for the F&B scene in Hong Kong that motivated her pursuit to guide her thoughts and research of the continental scene in penning her first book, Cocktails of Asia.

“One of the reasons I wrote the book is the perception of Europe and Americas as ahead of us [in Asia] with cocktails. When I travel [abroad from Hong Kong], I'm usually disappointed. I come back [to Asia] and I'm wowed by flavour innovation, combinations, and the industry. Everyone wants everyone to achieve the best. There’s barely any competitiveness, everyone is so happy for each other [to win awards and grow].”

“Whether that's our produce or the people, I always just think Asia kicks ass. That's exactly why I wrote the book because I wanted to be like, hey, everyone, look how dope we are.”

Her verifiable ode to the cocktail scene in Asia comes in clear timing during Hong Kong and Asia’s post-pandemic recovery, where strict COVID-19 rules and border lockdowns are vanishing.

At its core, it’s a recipe book that Holly has curated to detail the classic cocktail history of tipples found across the hot and varied continent. Her in-depth research and thoughts are poured into the cocktail recipes, with a focus on Asian products, most importantly, gin, sake, and tequila. Stories of her experiences at Asia’s best bars and with bartenders who run the industry are included, heightening the emotion of each recipe.

“It's my love letter to Asia and me wanting to showcase to the rest of the world. As much as I know that I'll get support from Asia, I really hope that the book does well internationally.”

Treating Hong Kong as a semi-permanent permeable home, Holly is off in mid-July, as soon as she landed from a visit to the seven countries in spring. In two months, Holly is planning to attend the annual Tales of the Cocktail festival in New Orleans, U.S., and a cocktail festival held in Argentina.

A classic F&B gall, whose favourite cocktail is a Gibson martini and favourite bar a considered selection of Pontiac, Penicillin, COA, or Quality Goods Club, Holly is passionate about her home in Hong Kong and where drinks in Asia are shaping the culture of drinking. She preaches wherever she travels.

“I'm really happy where I am at my job at DRiNK [Magazine]. Being away from Hong Kong for a while and then coming back, no matter how tough things are, you have this renewed sense of love for [the city]. You always think, this is why I love it. I'm falling in love with Hong Kong all over again.”

On her future plans, Holly remains busy promoting Cocktails of Asia, but cautious to involve herself in a new project in order to slow down. “I have to pump the brakes. At some point, I've got my finger in too many pies at the moment.”

The 24th Hong Kong Food Festival will run from Dec. 24 to 28, 2026, at Hall 3 of the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre (HKCEC), bringing six themed food zones under one roof for the Christmas season.

Buckle up because it's guaranteed to be a big one. Organizers, after all, bill it as December's largest indoor food carnival and boast that the annual event attracts more than a million visitors each year.

The six food zones cover Japanese, Korean, and Taiwanese food and local snacks; international cuisine, wine, coffee, and desserts; Southeast Asian specialties; Chinese Festive food, grain and oil, and dried seafood area; health, wellness, and vegetarian area; and a Premium Brand Zone.

It's a loaded lineup, built to give you everything you need from snack-stockpiling, experimenting with other regional flavors, gifting to family and friends, and refilling pantry essentials.

For brands interested in snagging a booth, exhibitor registration is now open across all six themed zones. With hundreds of thousands of people looking to make the holidays special, organizers are encouraging brands to take part and not miss the opportunity to showcase their brand to international visitors as well.

The Hong Kong Food Festival will also share the holiday crowd with three concurrent exhibitions: HK Mega Showcase, HK Homex, and e-Expo & Auto HK. Together, these events make sure that even if you're rushing through some last-minute Christmas shopping, you'll find something suitable for your loved ones.

Businesses interested in exhibiting can contact the organizers at hkexhi@hka.com.hk, call +852 2591 9823, or reach them via WhatsApp at +852 6657 8800. An exhibitor inquiry form is also available online.

Madrid’s MYKA Greek Frozen Yogurt Opens First Asian Flagship in Hong Kong

MYKA 3Photo by MYKA Greek Frozen Yogurt

Hong Kong’s frozen dessert scene just got a new addition from Spain, as MYKA Greek Frozen Yogurt has officially landed in Central, marking both its Hong Kong debut and its first opening in Asia.

Founded in 2023 by French-Mexican chef Natalia Morales and entrepreneur Javier Ezquerro, the fast-growing Madrid-born brand has expanded across 17 countries with 290 signed franchises in cities including New York, Paris, London, Miami, and Mexico City. Now, it's bringing its signature take on frozen yogurt to Wellington Street.

What sets MYKA apart is its ingredient-first approach. Instead of relying on industrial powdered mixes, its frozen yogurt is made with authentic Greek yogurt and goat’s milk kefir, using live cultures and strained yogurt to achieve a rich, creamy texture. The Hong Kong flagship follows the same standards as its international stores, sourcing premium ingredients such as Sicilian pistachios, Madagascar vanilla, orange blossom honey, and high-quality cocoa.

The new Central location also houses an in-house production kitchen, where both the frozen yogurt and toppings are prepared fresh daily. Alongside the Original Greek Frozen Yogurt, customers can expect rotating seasonal flavors and a lineup of house-made toppings including fleur de sel chocolate crumble, reduced-sugar baklava, praliné crunch, and artisanal fruit compotes.

With its combination of authentic Greek yogurt, house-made toppings, and globally sourced ingredients, MYKA is bringing a fresh perspective to Hong Kong’s dessert scene. As the brand likes to put it: “It’s not froyo, it’s MYKA.” For more details and the latest updates, follow their Instagram account.

PAN de PAIN & Ovaltine Team Up for a Nostalgic, Chocolatey Pancake Treat

Pan de Pain 6

If Ovaltine was a staple of your childhood, you'll want to make a beeline for PAN de PAIN. Hong Kong's first soufflé pancake shop has teamed up with the chocolate drink mix brand for a limited-time collaboration that packs all those familiar choco-malt flavors into a seriously indulgent dessert.

The star of the menu is the Ovaltine Crunchy Soufflé Pancake (HK$128), which takes PAN de PAIN's signature cloud-like pancakes and loads them with Ovaltine cream sauce, Ovaltine syrup, chewy mochi, crunchy Ovaltine bits, and a drizzle of chocolate sauce. Every bite is a mix of soft, chewy, creamy, and crunchy textures, with that unmistakable Ovaltine flavor running through it all.

And because no Ovaltine-inspired treat is complete without a drink, the collaboration also includes Ovaltine with Creamy Milk Foam (HK$68). Rich, creamy, and topped with silky milk foam, it's the perfect companion to the pancakes.

If you're planning to go all in, the Ovaltine Crunchy Soufflé Pancake Set (HK$178) is also available to let you enjoy both together.

Just weeks before G-DRAGON’s highly anticipated return to Hong Kong for BIGBANG's three-day concert at Kai Tak Stadium this November, the K-pop icon is giving fans another reason to line up, this time at McDonald’s. The fast-food giant has officially launched its collaboration with G-DRAGON and his fashion label PEACEMINUSONE, bringing a Korean-inspired menu and a collection of limited-edition merch to the city as part of a rollout spanning 13 Asian markets.

The food lineup centers on a new Gochujang Butter Sauce developed by McDonald’s Korea. In Hong Kong, fans can try it in the new McCrispy with Gochujang Butter Sauce, which pairs a crispy Cajun-seasoned chicken thigh fillet with the sweet, savory, and spicy Korean-inspired sauce. The sauce is also available as a dip for Chicken McNuggets. Meanwhile, those who prefer extra heat can opt for the McSpicy burger version.

For dessert, there’s an OREO McFlurry with Sweetheart and Bite-sized Salted Caramel Churros. Selected items also arrive in packaging decorated with PEACEMINUSONE’s signature daisy motif, complete with the missing petal.

The star-studded culinary lineup continues with Netflix stars Chef Park Joon-woo and Chef Lim Hee-won, who will showcase French-Korean fusion dishes and modern takes on Korean ingredients on Sept. 26 and 27, respectively.

Dairy Queen Makes a Sweet Comeback with 4 New HK Stores This November

The city's dessert lovers have another sweet reason to get excited this year. American soft-serve giant Dairy Queen is officially making its return to Hong Kong this November, marking its comeback decades after its brief stint in Causeway Bay in 1979 when various American fast-food chains first entered the market.

The brand will kick off its Hong Kong revival with a flagship store at One Causeway Bay on Gloucester Road, while a second confirmed outlet is set to open at lifestyle, shopping, and entertainment hub The ANGLE in Kwun Tong. Two additional locations across the New Territories and the outlying islands are also planned, with further details expected soon.

Known around the world for its signature soft-serve cone and legendary Blizzard treats, Dairy Queen has built a devoted following thanks to its thick ice cream creations packed with cookie, candy, and brownie mix-ins. The Blizzard remains one of the chain's most iconic menu items, famous for being served upside down to prove just how thick it is.

The upcoming openings are only the beginning, though. Under plans announced by International Dairy Queen, operator Shanghai Dairy Queen Limited aims to open 60 DQ restaurants in Hong Kong before 2034, so expect more branches in the coming years!

PMQ Flockfest 2026 Brings Craft Beer and Live Music to Central

Flockfest 2026Photo by Flockfest/Instagram

If your ideal weekend involves a glass of cold craft beer and live music, PMQ Flockfest 2026 should already be marked on your calendar this week. The three-day craft beer and music festival runs from Sept. 11 to 13, 2026 at PMQ's Courtyard & Marketplace on the ground floor, with free admission throughout.

Organized and presented by Black Kite Brewery, Flockfest brings together four Hong Kong breweries and four Japanese breweries in a "4-by-4" collaboration. The Hong Kong lineup includes the organizers themselves, Deadman Brewery, Heroes Beer Co., and Yardley Brothers, alongside Japan's Black Tide Brewery, DD4D Brewery, Far Yeast Brewing, and Shizuoka-based West Coast Brewing.

Together, these craft breweries will introduce eight limited-edition collaboration beers, plus signature brews and exclusive flavors. In other words, there's plenty to explore even if you attend all three days of the festival. Flockfest also features curated food pairings, with four local food stalls offering special menus and beer-pairing recommendations.

Flockfest, however, is not strictly a drinking affair. The program includes 13 live music acts spanning indie rock, R&B, and alternative — a music lineup that, like the beer counterpart, also bridges the culture between the two locations. Interactive sessions will also give beer enthusiasts the chance to meet master brewers from Hong Kong and Japan, while pop-up stores and creative workshops ensure there's plenty more to do, like shopping and getting crafty.

The festival runs from 5 to 10 PM on Friday, 12 NN to 10 PM on Saturday, and 12 NN to 5 PM on Sunday. Admission is free, while visitors can pre-book an event beer package that includes limited-edition glassware and other perks. Klook packages are also available, with exclusive merch.

There's a lot packed into this weekend at the PMQ for both dedicated craft beer fans and curious enthusiasts alike. If you want a weekend plan that involves a little something more than a drink invite, Flockfest can give you both the drink and the entertainment.

This New Corn Snow Ice Is Your Next Unexpected Hot Pot Companion

Popular Shanghainese Thai-inspired hotpot restaurant Fall In Thai has added a new frozen treat to their dessert menu. Putting a playful spin on viral Korean sweet corn deserts and the comfort food classic, cool off this season with Fall In Thai's Creamy Corn Soup Crunchy Snow Ice. Inspired by the rich, savory flavors of corn soup, the new creation transforms the familiar favorite into a refreshing snow ice dessert designed to cool diners down after a fiery Thai hotpot feast.

Known for its authentic Thai broths and lively hot pot experience, the local favorite is venturing into sweet-and-savory territory with their dessert that delivers multiple layers of flavor and texture in every spoonful. Mixed throughout the creamy snow ice are three signature corn ingredients that add crunch, richness, and bursts of sweetness to bring even more texture to the table: corn grains, crispy corn flakes, and popcorn.

The new dessert arrives as the perfect counterpart to Fall In Thai's signature hot pot flavors, including Tom Yum Goong Shrimp Broth, Coconut Milk Chicken Broth, and Slow-cooked Beef Brisket Coconut Milk Chicken Combo. After a bubbling pot, a spoonful of icy corn goodness offers an instant cooldown and a welcome break from the heat.

The Creamy Corn Soup Crunchy Snow Ice is now available at Fall In Thai's AIRSIDE and New Town Plaza locations while stocks last. For the latest updates, follow the restaurant on Instagram and Facebook.
