WWF Invites Hong Kong Public to Become Coral Protectors to Save Marine Life
WWF-Hong Kong has recently launched the Reviving Our Corals initiative in partnership with the Coral Academy of The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
The initiative aims to rescue and nurture at least 1,000 detached coral fragments, called “coral babies”, in the north-eastern waters of Hong Kong. WWF's approach is to proactively restore coral communities by conducting underwater surveyance and rescuing corals with the potential to be nursed back to health.
Selected fragments are brought back to their facility where they are documented, restored to good condition, and then returned to their natural habitat. In 2021, the survival rate of the rescued corals exceeds 90% in WWF’s “Coral Rescuer” collaboration with Coral Academy.
The Coral Academy is now collecting coral egg bundles to increase diversity and improve the adaptive capacity of corals in Hong Kong’s waters. After nurturing them in the facility for at least two years, they will be returned to the Tolo Channel. In 2022, it was found that these laboratory-bred, outplanted corals were successfully spawning and multiplying in the field.
WWF invites the public to join the initiative to become Coral Protectors by making one-off or regular monthly donations to help scale up coral restoration and other conservation work in Hong Kong and globally.
Coral Protectors can receive personalized e-certificates, regular coral updates, and invitations to coral cookie painting workshops, glass-bottomed boat trips, and an exclusive coral nurturing tour. This initiative allows people to witness the tangible impacts of their participation in marine conservation.
