European culture enthusiasts are in for all things French as the French May Arts Festival, otherwise known as Hong Kong’s annual “Le French May,” joins forces with the French GourMay Food and Wine Festival.
Presenting over 100 arts and cultural programmes about photography, circus, music, dance, and theatre, the French May festival aims to bring the best French creations to Hong Kong by integrating art and culture into everyday life, for all of May until June 30.
This year’s programmes include “The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Noir & Blanc – A Story of Photography,” which features over 170 internationally acclaimed photographers, 250 important photographs from Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF), and 30 photographs from the M+ Collections.
The festival will also present classical dance masterpieces from Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America performed by France’s Divertimento Orchestra led by conductor Zahia Ziouani and the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong in Symphony of New Worlds. With choreographer Mourad Merzouki and his Compagnie Käfig stage, the audience will get to witness HipHop, breakdance, martial arts, and contemporary dance turn into a breathtaking spectacle.
Following that, the renowned pianist Niu Niu and rising star flutist Cocomi will hold a concert called “Beautiful Harmony.” Lastly, there will also be a series of theatre plays as part of the Hong Kong-France theatre exchange project called “Let the Mirror Speak.”
Happening from May 1 to 31, the French GourMay Food and Wine Festival will collaborate with restaurants, merchants, and professionals to provide the best culinary experiences to celebrate the Tastes of the South of France from Occitanie.
Have a taste of carefully curated menus from participating restaurants or take advantage of special deals on French wines and gourmet products from partner merchants.
Adding to the list of fun activities to explore, food lovers will have the opportunity to participate in thematic wine tastings and cooking lessons to discover the aromas and flavours provided by the regional specialties from the Occitanie region.

The 2026 edition of the park's "The Grave Rave"-themed Halloween Fest runs from Sept. 5 to Nov. 1, 2026 on designated dates, marking one of Hong Kong's largest seasonal takeovers, with new haunted zones, roaming ghouls, gothic dance parties, and a nightlife-style finale.
Headlining the event is the "FWD Insurance Presents: Under the Castle Haunted Experience," based on "Under the Castle," an original fantasy universe created and creatively directed by Jackson Wang. The attraction reimagines The Summit as a mist-covered, neon-green castle where guests wander through mirror illusions and escape crystal-cursed "living dead" creating a looping nightmare that blur reality and dream.

The Under the Castle zone extends well beyond the haunted house. A dark ride, "Bumper Blaster," bathes its bumper cars in shadowy green light as riders dodge roaming ghosts, while a carnival-style "Nightmare Game Booth" offers limited-edition prizes. Guests can also stop by the "SnapGenie Spot," an interactive booth generating AI-powered fantasy photo backdrops; "Into the Mirror," a gravity-defying photo installation built for social media; and the "Phantom Lounge," a nightly ballroom dance where a mysterious host presides over a classical waltz. A separate "Gothic Ball" invites gothic-attired guests to sway to distorted classical music in a darkly romantic hall.
Three more haunted zones round out the scare lineup: "AEON Card Presents: Voodoo Boo Terror Park," a 3D-glasses blackout experience at The Waterfront that plunges guests into a distorted spectral world and challenges them to restore the park's power; "Orion Beer Presents: Troublesome Night 8," inspired by the classic Hong Kong horror film of the same name, which winds through abandoned villages and coffin altars under a mysterious medium's guidance; and "Forbidden Asylum," where guests use bone-conduction headphones to investigate a psychiatric hospital's mass disappearance and uncover a "bloody truth." A parallel dimension, "Hong Kong Paranormal Barrier," resurrects local legends, including paper dolls, Meng Po, a Taoist priest, and the Black and White Impermanence.
Voodoo Boo, the mischievous ghost anchoring the Waterfront zone, also returns for meet-and-greet sessions and a game party, "Voodoo Boo All Night," featuring hosts, games, and hidden prizes.
For scares, you can pose with roving costumed characters and Ocean Park has doubled the number to more than 120 characters spread throughout the park.

Nightly entertainment includes "Trip.com Presents: OPPA Scaremonies," featuring an eight-member "infernal" group called Demoon King, and Hong Kong's largest-ever "Ghoulish Cosplay Party," complete with an OOTD contest crowning a Ghost King and Queen, solo character showcases and DJ sets spanning Canto-Pop, J-Pop, and K-Pop. A few more shows round out the lineup: "Sway Pole Spectacle," with stilt performers; "Diva Paper Doll Reviving Night," in which joss paper dolls come to life; "Fright Spark Sliders," featuring acrobatic zombies; "Asylum Forbidden Stage," a high-energy dance showcase from "asylum inmates;" Skelebration Fiesta," a daytime celebration that turns into a skeleton parade after dark; and lastly, a roaming "Spooky Live Band."
Families have plenty to look forward to. The "Bulu Boo Trick-or-Treat Party" and "Trick or Roll Game" offer lower-scare, candy-focused joy for kids, while a haunted ride on the Ocean Express and the nightly light-and-water show "Gala of Lights: Let in the Dark," featuring projections, water curtains, and dancing fountains.
Entry to the designated haunted houses and select attractions requires a Halloween Haunted Combo Ticket, and event details are subject to change without prior notice.

852 Mahjong Social will host their August edition of their monthly "Mahjong Nights" at BaseHall 02 on Aug. 12, 2026, from 7 to 10 PM.
Tickets cost HK$250 per person, which includes a HK$100 BaseHall food voucher. You can grab tickets in the club's Instagram bio.
The event, set in BaseHall's BH02 Event Space, is the latest installment of the club's monthly mixer. Organizers said they'll lay out 15 to 20 tables, spanning a range of styles and skill levels, then match guests to seats based on pace and personality.
Beginners are 100% welcome, but complete novices should brush up first. Players need a working knowledge of gameplay, so rounds stay fair for everyone at the table. For guests who already know the basics and want to sharpen them, though, they say the club is one of the fastest ways to level up.
Beyond the mahjong, the three-hour event includes mini table games sprinkled throughout the night, with a sponsor-backed prize for whoever wins. There's strictly no gambling involved. Organizers have said the games are for fun only.
"We're really here for strengthening the connection, honoring the culture and building the community," the founders told The Beat Asia.
Courtesy of 852 Mahjong SocialCourtesy of 852 Mahjong Social
The event taps into a familiar problem for younger players: plenty of people want to play mahjong but don't always have a group to call on to play, and even fewer want to deal with hosting. It's also quite intimidating for newcomers to join the local mahjong scene where games move faster than beginners can follow. Their club aims to be the complete opposite.
"Some of our guests tell us that the locals are a little bit too fast and scary and intimidating, and we are very inclusive at our club," the founders told The Beat Asia. "There's absolutely no gambling, and we're just here to have some fun, meet people and play mahjong."

I was born in Hong Kong, raised in Canada, and have called a handful of other countries home along the way. As a third-culture kid — now a third-culture adult — I've never quite fit into a single box.
Maybe that's why, now that I'm back living in Hong Kong for the second time as an adult, this time with my own kids in tow, I've fallen for a version of the city that doesn't fit into one either.
The minute you step off the plane, there's a hint of something wonderful ahead: the humidity, the palm trees, the gentle breeze, that indescribable yet familiar scent. Follow that trail, and you'll find a Hong Kong that is more lush, more alive, and more mysterious than pop media ever portrayed.

As I rediscover this city for myself, I want to bring you along — sharing what I learn, and helping you unlearn the stereotypes that paint a pretty flat picture of a complex city. Right now, I'm wonder-struck, and honestly a little overjoyed, by just how abundant and accessible nature is here.
I'm learning about Hong Kong's ecology through everyday life — trying to identify species of birds, insects, plants, and other critters that are new to me — and through conversations and workshops with people deeply involved in the field, across non-profit, academic, civil service, and private-sector organizations.
As a tidbit: did you know Hong Kong is home to over 3,000 species of vascular plants, 55 species of terrestrial mammals, nearly 600 species of birds, over 100 species of reptiles and amphibians, almost 250 species of butterflies, and over 130 species of dragonflies (AFCD). In the water, Hong Kong is home to nearly 6,000 recorded marine species — more than 25% of China's marine biodiversity (HKMPA).
For such a small area, the biodiversity here is truly astounding.

By day, I work at a campsite and adventure park. By night, I'm a doctoral student and consultant in the ecotourism and conservation fields. I'm neither an outsider nor an insider — which feels fitting, because I'm learning there's no single identity for our beloved city. There's something for everyone here, and something unique to discover every day.
Which brings me to sharing ways you can discover something new in Hong Kong too. Our backyard is vast, and there's much to explore.

Europe's most decorated equestrian theatrical masterpiece is finally arriving in Asia, and Hong Kong gets first dibs.
CAVALLUNA - Gate to the Otherworld will trot into Kai Tak Arena at Kai Tak Sports Park for eight performances on Sept. 8 and Sept. 10 to 13, 2026, marking the production's first-ever stop in Asia and first show outside Europe in its 23-year history.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club is the Exclusive Presenting Partner and Cultural Host, folding the spectacle into its ongoing event calendar.
Tickets are on sale now through Ticketflap and HK Ticketing online, ranging from HK$395 to HK$1,995.
If you're picturing a standard-issue horse show, think bigger — much bigger. CAVALLUNA has drawn more than 9 million spectators across 30 European cities by putting on a production like no other. Bringing together equestrian mastery and theatrical grandeur, the show follows Meerin, a young sorceress whose drawings come to life, as she battles dark forces (and her own self-doubt) in a story that resonates with most audiences.
Everyone's treated to a cinematic showcase of 54 horses spanning 8 breeds, from stately Friesians to elegant Lusitanos to pint-sized mini ponies. World-class riders Bartolo Messina and Kenzie Dysli headline the cast, alongside Italian newcomer Rudj Bellini.
Messina, a longtime CAVALLUNA favorite since 2014, is known for training horses entirely through liberty dressage with his group of horses, including Lusitanos, Tinkers, a Cartujano, and more. Dysli, a German-Spanish trainer who got her start acting in the "Windstorm" film franchise, brings to the stage her own liberty work and Doma Vaquera, a traditional Spanish riding style.

The centerpiece of the night is the Hungarian Post, a stunt in which a single rider balances atop two galloping horses while steering several more. Add in daring trick riding, a live dance ensemble, an original score, and elaborate handcrafted costumes, and it's easy to see why the theatrical production has become somewhat of a fixture across Europe.
"This is a defining moment for Hong Kong's cultural calendar as well as for our company," Johannes Mock-O'Hara, CEO of Apassionata World GmbH, the production company behind CAVALLUNA, said in a statement. "To be the first Asian city to welcome CAVALLUNA underscores the city's standing as Asia's premier destination for world-class events. We are proud to partner with The Hong Kong Jockey Club, whose legacy and commitment to excellence make them the perfect Cultural Host for this extraordinary production."
The Hong Kong Jockey Club is the Exclusive Presenting Partner and Cultural Host of CAVALLUNA — a signature highlight of its Year of the Horse campaign, which aims to honor the profound partnership between human and horse and to unite the community through thrilling races, international equestrian spectacles, and a special series of cultural, sporting, and family events.
As Official Equine Transport Partner, Cathay Cargo is operating a series of dedicated charter flights using its Boeing 747 aircraft to bring all 54 show horses safely from Europe to Hong Kong.
For more information and updates, follow CAVALLUNA Hong Kong on Instagram or visit their website.
