Hong Kong's Built Heritage Conservation Fund is now open for a second round of funding applications. The Development Bureau announced in a press release that local non-profit organisations experienced in built heritage conservation are eligible to apply.

The fund was established with the primary aim of promoting public education, increasing community awareness, and fostering an environment of public participation in preserving Hong Kong's rich architectural history. It represents an opportunity for stakeholders to take proactive measures to maintain and revitalise historic buildings in the city.

The initiative began as a pilot programme in 2017, attracting more than 16,000 participants. The first round saw a host of public engagement activities, including educational exhibitions, thematic lectures, site visits, and an online forum dedicated to heritage conservation.

Examples from Batch I of the fund include “HKICON – Our Neighbourhoods (Heritage of Our Day)” led by the Hong Kong Institute of Architectural Conservationists, the “Maintenance and Appreciation of Historical Building” project established by the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors, and “CoVitalize Our Heritage” by the Hong Kong Institute of Architects.

For this new funding round, the bureau has outlined three priority themes for applicants. These themes are: "Looking After Our Heritage Buildings," "Engaging Young People in Heritage Conservation," and "Our Built Heritage & Our Community: Education, Religion & Heritage".

By focusing on these topics, the fund aims to broaden the spectrum of community involvement and knowledge regarding heritage conservation. This public engagement initiative represents an opportunity to drive community involvement in the preservation and appreciation of Hong Kong's built heritage.

Applications for this round of funding will close at 12PM, Oct. 3. Click here to apply.
