Malaysia, 8 Other Muslim Cities to Mark First Day of Ramadan on March 23

Awal Ramadan in Malaysia is expected to begin on March 23, according to the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia’s (JAKIM) calendar. During this time, Muslims all over the world devote themselves to worship, prayer, and fasting between sunrise and sunset.

Official dates will be finalised depending on the crescent moon sighting and will be announced by the Keeper of the Rulers' Seal Office soon.

Muslims in Malaysia refer to the Islamic dates published by the Panel of Astronomical Experts of the Islamic Development Department of Malaysia to figure out when Ramadan will start. This year, it corresponds to 1 Ramadan 1444 Hijrah (March 23, 2023) and will end in 29 days, or on April 20.

In addition to Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Qatar, and Turkey will also observe Ramadan beginning on March 23, The Hindustan Times reported yesterday. Meanwhile, Muslims from other countries, including Pakistan, India, Indonesia, and South Africa, will likely begin their month-long fasting tomorrow, March 22, until April 21.
